Welcome

First, we must express our appreciation to all members of the Scientific and Organizing Committee and to the Institutions and Companies whose generous contributions will help to make this meeting a successful and scientifically rewarding event.

LACE symposium series was created in 1995 in a small meeting in Santiago, Chile, with the purpose of keeping Latin American scientists abreast of the latest advances in technology for microseparations, specifically capillary electrophoresis and microchip technology.

For this edition, we want to celebrate this 25th anniversary recognizing the extraordinary effort made by Emeritus Chair, Professor Norberto A. Guzman, to maintain the success of this symposium after 25 editions. Curiously, 25 are the years during which Professor Ziad El-Rassi has been Editor-in-Chief of the Electrophoresis journal. We want to thank the inputs from Professor El-Rassi in electrophoresis field. In this regard, we are honored to announce that he will give the closing invited plenary lecture. Also, and not least, Professor Robert Kennedy (Associate Editor of Analytical Chemistry journal) will illuminate us with the inaugural invited plenary lecture. No question about it is an excellent start!

The symposium is structured in four days with traditional initial pre-symposium course, followed by plenary and keynotes lectures and oral communications, as well as poster sessions, vendor seminars and exposition. Specifically, we are proposing in this edition, after the 25-anniversary conference imparted by our dearest Norberto, two invited plenary lectures: opening one by Professor Kennedy which will open officially the symposium, and the closing plenary by Professor El-Rassi in which our community will give thanks to him as for his valuable effort in the driving the Electrophoresis journal. Also, every day will be divided in sessions which will start with a key note presentation followed the oral communications. Finally, the last session of each day will be flash communications and poster presentations. It will allow to give more visibility to the PhD and junior PostDoc students as well as that the poster contributions have a more impact on our audience.

Sessions will include omics (proteomics, glycomics, foodomics, metabolomics), genetic analysis, DNA sequencing and separation, bioanalysis, biotechnology, multidimensional separation approaches, hyphenated techniques, mass spectrometry, novel instrumentation, sample treatment, miniaturization, microfluidics, microchip electrophoresis, paper based analytical devices, (bio)pharmaceutical food, bioanalytical and environmental applications, and much more.

We sincerely hope that all aspects of the conference, the scientific sessions, the discussions, the pre-symposium course, and instrumentation exhibition, will serve their intended purposes to advance the science of electroseparations and beyond as well as to foster scientific contacts.

It is our sincere wish that your experience this year in Alcalá de Henares be both enjoyable and professionally rewarding. In addition, it will give you the fantastic opportunity to visit our beautiful and unique World Heritage Places declared by UNESCO in 1998 such as the University and Historic Town.

We extremely hope to see you in Alcalá!

Our warmest and sincere regards,

Alberto Escarpa and Agustin González
